Publication Ethics

Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement

Journal of Physical Education and Sport (JPES) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of publication ethics and integrity. The journal strictly adheres to the core principles and guidelines established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) [COPE]. All parties involved in the publishing process—authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher (RO Sport & Art)—must agree upon and uphold these expected standards of ethical behavior.

1. Duties and Responsibilities of Authors

  • Originality and Plagiarism: Authors must ensure that their submitted work is entirely original. Any form of plagiarism, including self-plagiarism (text-recycling) or redundant/duplicate publication, is strictly unacceptable and will result in immediate rejection or retraction of the paper.
  • Data Accuracy and Integrity: Authors are required to present an accurate account of their original research and an objective discussion of its significance. Fabrication, falsification, or manipulation of data constitutes severe scientific misconduct.
  • Authorship of the Paper: Authorship must be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the study. All co-authors must approve the final version of the paper and agree to its submission for publication.
  • Human and Animal Subjects: Since research in sports science frequently involves human participants, authors must confirm that all procedures complied with the ethical standards of the Declaration of Helsinki. A statement proving that Informed Consent was obtained from all human participants, and that the study was approved by an institutional Research Ethics Committee (IRB), must be explicitly included in the manuscript.
  • Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: Authors must disclose any financial or personal relationships with people or organizations that could inappropriately influence or bias their work. All sources of financial support for the project must be clearly acknowledged.

2. Duties and Responsibilities of Reviewers

  • Contribution to Editorial Decisions: Peer review assists the editors in making editorial decisions and, through editorial communications with the authors, may assist authors in improving the quality of their paper.
  • Confidentiality: Any manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others except as authorized by the Editor-in-Chief.
  • Standards of Objectivity: Reviews must be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Reviewers should express their views clearly with supporting arguments and evidence.
  • Promptness: Any selected referee who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the editor and excuse themselves from the review process.

3. Duties and Responsibilities of Editors

  • Publication Decisions: The Editor-in-Chief is solely responsible for deciding which of the articles submitted to the journal should be published. These decisions are driven exclusively by the scientific merit, relevance, and originality of the manuscript, without regard to the authors' race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy.
  • Confidentiality: Editors and editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.
  • Conflict of Interest: Editors will recuse themselves from considering manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.

4. Dealing with Ethical Misconduct

  • Investigation: The publisher (RO Sport & Art) and the editorial board will take reasonable steps to identify and prevent the publication of papers where research misconduct has occurred. In the event of suspected or alleged misconduct, the journal will follow COPE flowcharts to conduct a thorough investigation [COPE].
  • Corrections and Retractions: The journal is always willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions, and apologies when needed. If a published paper is found to contain significant errors or plagiarism, it will be formally retracted following COPE's Retraction Guidelines [COPE].

Use of Generative AI

We ask authors who have used generative AI or AI-assisted tools to insert a statement at the end of their manuscript immediately above the references or bibliography entitled ‘Declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process’.

In that statement, we ask authors to specify the tool that was used and the reason for using the tool. We suggest that authors follow this format when preparing their statement:

During the preparation of this work the author(s) used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE....................]

in order to [REASON.............................................................................................................].

After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and

take(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication.

AI or AI-assisted tools should be described as part of the methodology of the work, with details provided in the Methods section, if relevant, or in a separate section preceding references or bibliography.

Editorial Process & Peer-Review Policy
To guarantee high academic quality, Journal of Physical Education strictly applies international ethical and selection standards:
•    Double-Blind Peer-Review System: All manuscripts are anonymously evaluated by at least two independent expert reviewers.
•    Anti-Plagiarism Policy: All submitted papers are verified using specialized software before entering the review process.
•    Open Access: We encourage the free circulation of knowledge; accepted articles are available free of charge to the scientific community.

Financial Support
Thanks to the full financial support provided by the Ro Sport & Art Association (RSAA), authors benefit from a favorable publishing policy, removing financial barriers to scientific dissemination (no hidden Article Processing Charges for regular issues selected by the RSAA council).
